David Ake: Green Thumb

Pianist David Ake leads a quartet of Boris Kozlov/b, Rudy Oryston/dr and  Tony Malaby/ts through a mix of originals and a couple standards. The team broods over a solemn “But Beautiful” with Malaby getting a bit elliptical on ”All The Things You Are”. The team is warm and gentle on originals like “Good Afternoon” with Ake reflecting like a mountain lake on the lyrical “John Prine”. Kozlov bows while Malaby is melancholy for “Walker Evans” and Royston pitter patters an intro into a post bopping “Stu’s News”. Ake goes it alone on a serenade of “Kendee” and the team is most agitated on the agonizing “Street Food”. For the most part, the album is subdued and chilled, made for sunset views.
