Supposedly, the “new thing” in in music is supposed to be coming from London’s Total Refreshment Center, a community of artists that mix R&B and rap with sounds akin to 60s soul. What you end up with is something that sounds like Archie Bell and the Dell’s “Tighten Up” on the hip hopping “Isa”, some African rapping with a bass synth line on “Black” and some “urban” rap and big drums sounds on “Visions”. Some dark strings swing with murky bass clarinet on “Closed Circle” and the synth sounds get murky with electronic effects on “”Crescent City”. Is that the sounds of The Philistines at the gates that I hear?
