Here’s a reason why its fun to review albums, s every once in awhile you find a real obscure beuaty. This one is a discovery of the rare 1967 album by tenor saxist D. B. Shrier, who’s teamed with Mike Michaels/p, Tyrone Brown/b and William Roye/dr for a “live” setting of adventurous tunes. There are also a handful of extra pieces, but the general gist is that Shrier had some chops and a sense of history. On one hand, he m oans the blues like an old timer as on””East” while going modern on the frisky pieces like ‘Raveesh” and a freeblowing Trane take of “All Blues”or “Steeplechase”. On the other hand, he can be as cool as Lester Young, swinging like all get out on” Just You, Just Me”, a hip “Indiana” and the swooning read of “These Foolish Things”. If you thought you’ve heard every tenor guy. This guy is a HOOT-a mix of history and adventure
