A pair of meetings between the kindred spirits of trombonist Julian Priester and pianist David Haney were recorded a number of years ago, and are finally released. The music has a very spontaneous feel to it, accurately portraying a moment of intuitive conversations.
Live At Kingston includes thick and ominous brass on eerie piano musings, leading into spacious ivories and warm workings by Priester. Priester has a big sound on the elegiac “Track Five” and is laconic for “Track Three” over Haney’s sprawling fingers. The fifteen minute fourth track is expressively melancholic, with the third tune filled with splats and spurts.
The second album has some nourish bowed bass work with Priester sliding in agony, while tinny strings get into altissimo pitch. Priester’s mouthpiece gets a cleaning with effects on the third tune, while the band bops to delight to Haney’s free-ish Bud Powell ideas and the p izzicato’d musings of the final tune. Instrumental affects to an expressive effect.
