Pianist Benjamin Lackner debuts on ECM with a team of trumpeter Mathis Eick, drummer Manu Katche’ and bassist Jerome Regard on a collection of mellow and pastoral originals. There’s one tune with Eick sitting out, with Lackner getting solemn on “Remember This” with his pretty tone teaming wit Jackson on the quartet title tune. Eick is his usual glowing and soft self, graceful on ”Where Do We Go From Here” and fluffy over the brushes on “Hung Up On That Ghost”. Lackner produces some lovely intros as on the delicately pulsating “Circular Confidence” with Regard fronting the team on the thoughtful “Emile”. The team works confidently as a unit, communicating well as they go from pastoral to assertive as they build up to the finish line of “My People”. Whiter shades of pale.
