A musical tribute to famed “Gonzo” journalist Hunter Thompson is delivered by vibist Dan McCarthy and his team of guitarists (Don Scott-Luan Phung), bassist (Daniel Fortin) and drummer (Ernesto Cervini). The panoramic album is bookended by bold and metallic guitar solos in Hendrixy fashion, with the material ranging from a straightahead take of Jefferson Airplane’s famed “White Rabbit” to some ricocheting jazz work as on the loose “Strang Rumblings In Aztlan”. Fortin gives some Mingus moods to the jabbing “Owl Farm” and joins in the spacey “Kingdom of Fear” with the leader. McCarthy floats on the title tune and “The High-Water Mark” and joins in the the mult-mooded “What Lines?” with Cervini adapting to every color and atmosphere, nimble on the military “We Were Somewhere Around Barstow” and kinetic on “Hell’s Angels”. A library of sounds.
