WONDER-FUL: Yoron Israel & High Standards: Visions-The Music of Stevie Wonder

Here’s an album so logically created and so successfully put together, you have to simply scratch your head and ask, “Why didn’t someone think of this idea before?” Leader and drummer Yoron Israel gets together a team of Lance Bryant/ts-ss, Lazio Gardony /key and  Ron Mahdi/b , and delves into the most important songwriter of the 70s, Stevie Wonder. He take material that you’d expect, such as “You Ar The Sunshine of My Life” and “All in Love is Fair,” and does lovely jazz treatments of them, with Bryant’s sax caressing the melody. The team gets a bit feisty on a Weather Reportish take of “Contusion” which has Bryant’s soprano duke it out with Gardony’s keyboards, while guest Thaddeus Hogarth’s harmonica adds lovely textures on “Passionate Raindrops.” The glorious vision includes spoken word poetry by Larry Roland which neither adds nor subtracts from the wondrous sounds provided by the whole team, and through it all, Israel guides the band and direction of the music like a Master Blaster. A great session that is Signed, Sealed and Delivered!
