Thick and palpably rich reeds are in the forefront of this album with Max Zenger/bs-bcl-bss-cbcl, Linda Fredriksson/bars-bcl, Joakim Berghall/bars-bcl along with a rhythm section of Jere Haakana/g, Jori Huhtala/b and Tuomas Timonen/dr. The plethora of lower end of the reed section, with bass sax, bass clarinet, contra bass clarinet and baritone sax, makes for hints of vintage Ellingtonia, as the horns puff over the rumble of “Duromina” and float over Haakana’s guitar on the pulsating “Dark Roast Theme”. There’s an echoey reflectiveness on “Haikia Huominen” that is kaleidoscopic in nature, which the horns getting into a Neopolitan traffic jam on the acidic “Carlina Vulgaris”. A Mulliganesque “Edelleen Jonossa” is coaxed along by Haakana’s strums, with textures that are almost three dimensional.
