Bobby Broom carries on the tradition of the lithe and #2 pencil thin bop lines of gents like Grant Green and George Benson, mixing soul and bop into a delicious stew. This album has him fronting a team of Justin Dillard/p-org, Dennis Carroll/b and Kobie Watkins/dr, and the team serves up a blue plate special of rib-sticking delights. The strings are bright as they bop on Bud Powell’s “Hallucinations” and gallop to Watkin’s sticks on “Quicksilver”. With Dillard’s keys, the team gets funkified on “Driftin” and soulful on the relentless “Humpty Dumpty”. The team has fun on the Monkified takes of “Blues On The Corner” and waltz gracefully on “Soulful Bill”. All the while, Broom sweeps clean with all the dust brushed away on clean corners of swing.
