Doug Sertl: Beautiful Friendship

Trombonist Doug Sertl adds a fresh flavor to the tried and true B3 trio on this date. He’s got the right foundation with Rick Montalbano on the Hammond, Terry Clarke on sticks and the eloquent Peter Bernstein on the guitar. They work on the standards here, and deliver blue plate specials like “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” with a nice backbeat. Sertl’s horn is sleek on a bouncy “I Hear A Rhapsody” and crisp on a Latinized “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You.” He weaves in and out of the B3 on a sneaky “Groovin’ High” while Bernstein caresses the strings on “Nancy (With The Laughing Face)”. A great filling meal with large portions of protein.
