SURF CITY…Dean Torrence & Friends: The Teammates

During the early 1960s, “Surf Music” was all the rage, with bands like The Beach Boys, The Surfaris, and of course Jan & Dean, who had hits like “Surf City “ and “Little Old Lady From Pasadena”. Before his was inadvertently linked to the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra Jr., Dean Torrence was part of the embodiment of the California scene, with his blond surfer look and harmonizing with Jan Berry among others for sounds that caught on with the Malibu and skate board crowd. This album features a kind of anthology from 1965-85, focusing on a couple of various sounds. On the one hand, you get Beach Boys’ vocals on pieces like “Summertime, Summertime”, “Fun, Fun, Fun”, “Ride The Wild Surf” and “Vegetables” with other songs such as “The Theme From Leon’s Garage” carry a Phil Spector Wall of Sound. Torrance goes through an R&B phase doo wopping through “Get a Job” and “A Teenager In Love” while getting Beatles-esque on “Jingle Bell Rock” > Was music really once this innocent?
