Leader Josh Hoyer plays keyboards, bari sax and sings like a soul brother on the Tower of Power-infested groover with his team of Benjamin Kushner/g, Mike Keeling/b, Harrison El Dorado/dr, Blake DeForest/tp, James Cuato/ts and guests Myles Jasnowski/voc and Skye Junginger/sax. The band has a “live” feel on this album, custom made for dance parties, with Hoyer’s bold voice leading the funk fest on “Evolution” and the Blood Sweat and Tearsy “Mr. One Up”. The horns and rhythm team snap like the Famous Flames on “Shou Shou Do” and gallop on the 6/8 “Loneliness”.
