Pastoral atmospheres are created by the team of vocalist Laura Crema joined by guitarist Bill Coon along with support from cellist Peggy Lee and tenor saxist Jon Bently on this sublime collection of originals. The mix of moods goes from a folksy and tender mix of voice and guitar as on “Sweet Embrace/Empty Space” to a read of Longfellow on “Arrow and the Song”. Bently brings in some rich tones for the soft “Blue Mist” and Lee’s cello gives a chamber’d parlor feel to the panoramic “August Blue”. There are a few jazzy moments with Crema scatting on the cozy “Happy Pl ace”, and the unison lines between the two leaders on “Stringsong” is quite clever. Mostly, though, it’s a relaxed rest by the pond.
