Quentin Baxter Quintet: Art Moves Jazz

Drummer Quentin E. Baxter gives a tribute to bebop giants on a percussive mix of originals and covers with his team of Charlton Singleton/tp, Mark Stebank/ts, Demetrius/p, Rodney Jordan/b and guests Gino Castillo/cong, Timothy Campbell/org and Calvin Baxter/as. The album is bookended by a pair of Monk tunes, slyly blending the hons on “Off Minor” and bopping with delight with crisp drumsticks supplied by the leader on “In Walked Bud”. Baxter and company  create a formidable rhythm team on the cool grooves of Robert Watson’s “Time Will Tell” and Jimmy Heath’s blue toned “For Miles and Miles”. Baxter takes up the pen for a four pat “ Art Moves Jazz Suite” mixing deft brush work on “Fall” and giving Jordan a spotlight on “Winter” and some grooving organ work on “Summer”. The overall mood is  peppy and optimistic, deep in roots and flavorful in ideas.
