Trombonist John Fumasoli leads a a large band through a sophisticated collection of arrangements. The pieces themselves are wide ranging, going from a soul/rock feel on “All That I Need” to a funkified take of “Summertime” that leans in after Dave Anderson’s hip electric bass. The brass is elegiac on the velvety “Chorale” and richly cascades on the Gil Evans-inspired “Past Ports” with the sections bold in primary colors on “When He Calls” and moody on “Better Left A Memory”. Big band with a beat.
