Jasper Hoiby: What It Means to be Human

Mixing speech and poetry while playing bass and electronics with saxist Josh Arcoleo and drummer Marc Michel, Jasper Oiby creates a melancholy mosaic of word and sound to “create a conversation of who we are as a people today”. There’s a mix of post modern tones with crying sax on the brooding “Vision of Outrage” with the team trudging through the loose “Earthness”. Words about “victories” mix with bass and effects on “Clock of the World”  and tapes meld with ambience for “Life Force Seeds”. There are some actual songs with some breathy tenor work on the title tune and a deep groove on “Onwards”, but the album feels more like a bohemian session at a local book store.
