Billy Drummond and Freedom Of Ideas: Valse Sinistre

Vancouver-based Cellar Music has been turning out some of the best post-bop music around for over the past ten years. Here’s another beaut, led by famed drummer Billy Drummond, and joined with warm toned saxist Dayna Stephens, pianist Micah Thomas and bassist Dezron Douglas. There’s a trio piece entitled “Reconfirmed” that spotlights Drummond’s deft work with Thomas, but when Stephens comes in with his tenor on the tricky “Little Melonae”, things get exciting. The team is meditative on “Laura” while Tony Williams’ “Lawra” simmers like fried onions. Stephens’ soprano is playful on ‘Never Ends” while the clever “Changes For Trane and Monk” sound like a disguised “Giant Steps”. These mix sophistication with fun.
