Andy Adamson Quintet: A Coincidence of Cats

The term for a group of cats is actually called a “clowder”, so the idea of a coincidence of cats is just the fact that they actually are together. This group of cats is put together by pianist Andy Adamson, and he’s brought in Ross Huff/tp-fh, Dan Bennett/ts, Brennan Andes/b and Jonathan Taylor/dr for six originals.

The music is sometimes as frisky as a cat on catnip, with the team going from soul to dark and flying around Andes’ deep pulse on the title track, while the horns swirl around the rhythm section’s trudge on “Hummingbird”. Adamson gives a gorgeous intro to the lyrical “Lament” with Taylor’s brushes assuaging the atmosphere, with Huff tapping into his inner Freddie Hubbard on the expressive “Morning Star” and Bennett bold and brilliant on the journey of “Triplet”. Feline festivities.
