For his third album, saxist Caleb Wheeler Curtis continues his trajectory of adventurism with post bop allstars Orrin Evans/p, Eric Revis/b and Gerald Cleaver/dr on a collection of fervent originals. On soprano sax, he gallops with Cleaver on the obstacle course of “C(o)urses” while his alto reveals dark hues when digging in on “Spheres” and the stop-starting “Splinters”. The trio sounds like a cousin to Brad Mehldau in textures and conversation, getting a bit Monkish on the deep “Surrounding” and soft and fragile under Curtis’ floating reed on “Trees For The Forest”, with pastel hues abounding on the impressionistic “ Tossed Aside”. Modern colors, yet accessible.
