Tenor saxist Troy Roberts brings a hip mix of jazz and upbeat R&B together on this easy on the ears album with Tim Jago/g, Silvano Monasterios/keys, Eric England/b and David Chiverton/dr. Roberts has a rich sound similar in feel to Cannonball Adderley or Gerald Albright, soulfully satisfying as he glides over England’s thick pulses on “Funkafarian” and the Weather Reportish pieces “Dreamstation” and “Big Daddy Ghetto-Rig”. Monasterios brings in some mellow textures to Chiverton’s backbeat on ”Mind Melder” and the team goes on a jiving journey as they stretch out with synths, guitar and grooves on “Big Night In”. There’s a ‘live’ feel to the band, jamming on “Linger” and simmering on the loose “Hypnagogia”, but always keeping the toes tapping. Stomping studs.
