Vocalist Mark Christian Miller has that classy, casual way of singing that sounds personal and conversational, never forced. Here, he teams up with pianist and arranger Jamieson Trotter along with Mike Gurrola/b, Kevin WInard/dr, Larry Koonse/g and Danny Janklow/as for a clever mix of re-vamped standards and dusted off obscurities.
Miller bounces like a handball with the deft Janklow on the easy bopping “If You Never Fall In L ove With Me”, letting his warm tenor of a voice frame the lyrics, here and also on the exotically swinging “Music In The Air” mixing relaxation with verve. The band gets dreamy with the alto saxist’s misty reed on “Prelude To A Kiss” and Koonses cool toned strings waft on “Lullaby Of The Leaves”. Gurrola and WInard dig deep to create a nice swell for Miller to body board over on a nifty “Too Darn Hot” while Trotter creates a haunting atmosphere for Miller to paint around on “I Wished On The Moon”.
