Bassist and composer Roberto Occhipinti forms a trio with pianist Adream Farrugia and drummer Larnell Lewis for interpretations of his own compositions and a couple covers. He’s got an elegant tone and inherent melodicism to his playing evidenced in the deft soft swing of “Emancipation Day” and the spacious “Steveland”. He digs in hard with Farrugia on “A Tynerish Swing” and is playful as he bows and picks with him on the fun cover of Jaco Pastorius’ “Opus Focus”. Quite intriguing is the leader’s bowing and yearning on the melancholic read of Jimmy Rowless’ “The Peacocks” and the emotive vocals of guest Ilaria Crociante on the penetrating “O Cessate De Piagarmi”. Rewarding returns.
