One of today’s most successfully intuitive pianists, Matthew Shipp, links up with outside sounding alto saxist Chad Fowler for a collection of improvisations. Actually, Shipp sounds quite compositional throughout, with bopping lines on “Chapter Four”, playful melodies for ‘Chapter Nine” and blue hues for “ Chapter Five”. Fowler, meanwhile, leans towards Johnny One Note, with almost every song sounding like “Happy New Year” with extroverted b lasts, flails, cacophonies, growls and wails. He goes dark on “Chapter 3”, fragile for “Chapter 8” and ravenous on “Chapter Eleven”, but all throughout, he’s like a vicious dog playing tug of war with you on an old rag. Don’t let go!
