Roxy Coss: Disparate Parts

One of my favorite of the younger saxists, Roxy Coss stretches out her dimensions on this recent release with her team of   Alex WIntz/g, Mike Ymanaka/p-key, Rick Rosato/b and Jimmy McBride/dr. She’s still got that warm sound on the tenor sax, but she shows her freer forms in a series of takes of Yamanaka’s  concise “February” in a series of mixes and matches with the bandmates. She digs a hip groove with WIntz on the post bopper “Ely, MN” and sambas with sizzle for the mercurial “Sunburn. On soprano, she lithely waltzes on “Mabes” and is delicately passionate on “The Spirit” part of a four movement suite that includes a swirling and intricate “The Mind” and a hard hitting and hectic “The Body”. Coss is taking on new directions, but she’s still got a firm grip of the wheel.
