Bill O’Connell: A Change Is Gonna Come

Pianist and composer Bill O’Connell brings out his pent up frustrations with themes of protest and justice on this album mixed and matched with Craig  Handy/ts-ss, Lincoln Goines/b, Steve Jordan/dr and Pedrito Martinez/perc. The famed Sam Cooke title tune has Handy’s tenor sermonizing a warm recitative, while he preaches over a bluesy cadence on “Enough Is Enough”. Jordan rocks the drums hard with O’Connell’s strong fists on “Moment’s Notice” with the leader giving some gospel mood with Handy’s soprano on the striding “Sun For Sunny”. The leader is reflective on a gentle trio that yearns for reconciliation on “A Prayer For Us”, while his keyboards get a bit funky on the hip hop take of the chestnut  “My Foolish Heart”. A reaction the draconian lockdown laws has O’Connell tap into his inner Monk on the angular “COVID Blues” while his fun side is brought out on the samba’d “Sweet Peanut”. Self-imposed solitude brings out interesting aspects of one’s thought processes.
