TRANE KEPT A ROLLIN’…The Dave Wilson Quartet: Stretching Supreme

Who’s the most influential tenor player of the past 50 years. Anyone doubt that it’s John Coltrane?

Dave Wilson plays  mostly tenor sax and a bit of soprano on a tribute to the “Classic” period of John Coltrane, focusing on the iconic album A Love Supreme, but also bringing in other sounds of the same period. His team of Kirk Reese/p, Tony Marino/g and Dan Monaghan-Alex Ritz/dr bring Impulse!-mooded tunes throughout. The centerpiece is the “Acknowledgment/Resolution” of Supreme with intensity and urgency being the call of the day with Wilson’s rich vibrato, Marino’s jogger’s pulse and Reeses’ Tyner inspired chordings. Wilson’s soprano is gorgeous over Reese on “On The Prairie and the team gets assertive on an extroverted “Naima” with Wilson back on tenor.   Wilson gives a kind of “Naima”-ish read on his own “On The Prairie” and reaches deep into the world of subtones on “Days of Wine and Roses”.
