Nina Simone and Her Friends: An Intimate Variety of Vocal Charm

This  reissue of the 1960 Bethlehem album from Nina Simone is unique in that Ms. Simone is only featured on a third of the recordings, sharing the spotlight with other vocalists from the label, namely Chris Connor and Carmen McRae. Simone is in a trio setting, showing her impressive chops on the exotic “African Mailman” and somber for the traditional “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” and “For All We Know”. With cool horn support, Connor is peppy on “I Concentrate on You” and dark on a noirish “Someone To Watch Over Me”. McRae is cool on the calypso’d “Old Devil Moon” and sultry for “You Made Me Care”. The template for 50s jazz singing.
