Cory Weeds with Strings: What Is There To Say?

Full toned tenor saxist Cory Weeds melds his working team of Phil Dwyer/p, John Lee/b and Jesse Cahil/dr with a richly texture orchestra on this collection of standards and originals. The strings are used for various settings and emphasis here, thoughtfully cinematic as they introduce  things up on “At Dawing” or gently entering after the thoughtful tenorist on “Alana Marie”.  Weeds is clever in that he keeps the introductions varied, as the trio opens up “The Phanton/The In Crowd” with rumbling tom toms before the team pops the clutch for a dramatic Latinized climax, Dwyer is graceful on the beginning of “What Is There to Say” and Cam Wilson’s violin opens the evocative door for a swinging “There’s A Boat Leavin’ Soon For New York”. Musical cinemascopes.
