Michael Mantler: Coda-Orchestral Suites

Compositions by Austrian trumpeter Michael Mantler are performed by an orchestra conducted by Christoph Cech, including a mix of classical and jazz (provided by the team of Tibor Kovesdi-Philipp Kienberger/b, Bjarne Roupe’/g, David Helbock/p and Maximillian Kanzler/vib-mar). The music is quite evocative and mood creating, with the strings and Helbock teaming with Roupe’ to stir up Hitchcockian suspense in “TwoThirteen Suite” as well as sweeping drama with Peter Tavernaro’s oboe on “HideSeek Suite”. Mantler’s trumpet is rich and Old World oriented over the pulsating strings on “Cerco Suite” and glowing on the panoramic “Folly Suite”. Leo Eibensteiner’s flute teams up with Roupe and Mantler to form brooding tensions on the noir’d “Alien Suite”, making all of the music beg to go alongside a black and white movie with Dan Duryea or Gloria Grahame.
