Bassist and leader Joseph Veloz plays, sings and delivers like a man who’s sounds like he knows sin and salvation, giving street smart bluesy rockers with a team of Tim O’Donnell/voc, Larry McCray/voc-g, Jim Alfredson/key, Donny Brown/dr and a collection of blue-jeaned guests on voice, guitar, horns and rhythm.
Veloz himself gives a jivey rasp on the sizzling “Up In My Ear” with the team showing off their chops on the percolating “Just Jammin’ (Again)” and the keyboards digging a rivulet on the slithering “The Velozian Shuffle”. Thornetta Davis burns up an electric take of “I Got My Mojo Working” with some searing vocals while baring he would wide open on the aria of “Crazy”. The team delivers an R&B feel on the synthy soul of “What You Won’t Do For Me” and O’Donnell’s guitar is back porch relaxed on “Mr. Cooper”. A nice Friday night cruise.
