Op Der Schmelz: Live

Alto and soprano saxist Roby Glod leads a quartet with Roberta piket/p, Mark Todar/b and Klaus Kugel/dr that got together for a concert in Luxembourg back in 2010. The music is considered “improvised” which means “lots of long solos” if you read the subtitles. Piket’s fluid solo intro flows into a trio and ultimately a cataclysmic drum solo during “Dredger of Pig Rolls” while Glod and Kugel go mano a mano during “Budmo, Hay!” After a few tunes, you’re simply sitting back and thinking to yourself, “OK, when is the obligatory drumstick screeching against the cymbal or plucking of the  piano strings coming,” and “voila!” there it is about half way through! Sounds that resemble a combination jai alai and racketball tournament in the same court are featured on the title track, while a semblance of melody, theme and structure is finally exposed on the closing “Still Alive.” If your idea of a great meal is pasta thrown against a wall to see if it is ready, this serving is just for you.
