Here’s an album, endorsed on the liner notes by Quincy Jones, that mixes modern jazz with the heat and beat of the inner city. Divided into three parts, the album goes from bop to hop with ease and grace. The first section, “JU Instrumental Room”, has three tunes featuring Carlos Alvares/tx, Ryan Easter/tp Zahili Gonzales/zam and Charles Overton/harp for a Steely Danish “Hey…Holla”, a cool toned “Blue In Greeen” and a dreamy “BluesNote In His Head”. Part two, “JU Song Room” has Nanina Johnson giving a soul princess take of “Unmistakably You” and a chorus strutting out “Perfume In Her Mind” led by Sammy Hopkins. Last is “JU SwingHipHop Room” for four tunes featuring the likes of Christian Scott/tp, Donal Harrison/as, Grace Kelly/as and Ayinde for a rap fest of “Questin” and “Legal Robbery” with a deep groove on “Money Funny”. Lot’s of groove and ‘tude.
