Marcin Wasilewski Trio: En Attendant

Since going out on their own from being the rhythm section for Tomasz Stanko, the team of pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz have created their own crystalline and spacious sound. This most recent album adds to their catalogue a depth of interplay and perfection of the use of silence as a sound.

There are three parts to “In Motion” which bookends and centers the album, including gentler and fragile sparks, in front drumming and stark atmospheres respectively. Wasilewski delivers a deliberate and achingly patient interpretation of on of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” with the other “cover” being a creatively somber read of The Doors’ “Riders On The Storm” featuring Kurkiewicz’a visceral bass. The lullabye “Glimmer of Hope” dispalys Wasilewski’s wide reach, while his hands are soft on a feathery delivery of Carla Bley’s “Vaskar”. Quiet nights of quiet stars.
