Mathias Eick: When We Leave

Sighing-toned trumpeter Mathias Eick adds a dash of voice and keyboards this time around on this folksy pastoral album including two drummers (Torstein Lofghus-Heighe Andreas Norbakken), piano (Andreas Ulvo), bass (Audun Erlien), violin (Hakon Aase) and pedal steel guitar (Stian Cartensen). His voice creates an almost liturgical feel along with his organ on the reverent tribute “Arvo” with folk moods evinced ow stings and steel strings on “Turning”. His patented emphysemic horn puffs and floats on “Loving” and is thoughtful intermingled with Ulvo during “Playing”. Elegaic crystal clear nights make for wondrous moments with Erlien and Ulvo creating a brisk midnight stroll on “Begging” with wide open spaces for pizzicato’d droplets on  “Flying”. Impressions of Nordic nights.
