Traditional instruments like Greek bouzoukis and Armenian duduks have a tough time getting into the contemporary music/jazz scene as the question comes to whether modern times should adapt to them, or vice versa. Babpiper Thomas Lukassek does an impressive job crossing the two worlds here with a release that glides between pastoral UK panoramas and modern urban energies. Acoustic guitars and folk rhythms meld well with the lovely wheezing pipes on material like “8th” while electronic beats and grooves liven up the late night pub jig on “Alasdair’s Reel.” A rock beat gets the mood up a few notches on “Ardelve Tide” while the synth rhythms of the title track detract a bit from the human touch of the traditional winds. Intriguing with a lot of promise
