Jake Baldwin: Where You’re Planted

Jake Baldwin gives everyone a chance to stretch out between vintage Blue Note post bopping material on this recent release. Baldwin plays trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet and even sings a dash along with Nelson Devereaux/ts, Ted Godbout/p, Ted Olsen/b and Adam Harder-Nussbaum/dr on this collection of originals.

Sequenced between the longer tunes are a series of vignettes, with the rhythm team working out on “Interlude 1”, Devereaux delivering long fuzzy tones on his aria of “ Nelson”, Harder-Nussbaum going solo on “Adam” and Olsen and Godbout giving some digital dexterity during “Ted O” and “Ted G” respectively. As a unite, the brushes are sleek on the soft “walking” while Baldwin is rich over the hip backbeat of “Aviar”. The rhythm team is kinetic for the horns on a vintage sounding “Ace Run” with the horns in bel canto form on the rich ballad “Watch Your Fingers.” Baldwin even taps into his inner Boz Scaggs as he croons out a mellow soul of “ True Love Will Find You In the End”. Well rooted ventures. Ok
