Mighty Fine: An Austin City Limits Tribute to Walter  Hyatt

The South Carolina band Uncle Walt’s Band had a big following in the 70s and 80s in the Austin, Texas area, with Walter Hyatt at the helm, who untimely left us in 1996 in a plane crash. This album is a recording of a 1997 concert from artists that were highly influenced and inspired by him, including Lyle Lovett  Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

The core King Tears Band of Rick Plant/g-g, BillyBlock/dr and Rick Gordon/g is joined by Willis Alan Ramsey on the fun and folksy “As the Crow Flies” while Junor Brown boogies through the rocking Strats on “Diggeroo”. Some easy slide guitar glistens with David Ball on “Houston Town”, with Lovett picking the blues on “I’m Calling”, sitting on the back porch of “I’ll Come Knockin’” and having two step fun on “Teach Me About Love”. There’s also some great harmony with him and Shawn Colvin on the bluesy “Babes In The Woods” while Willis Alan Ramsey goes deep on “Lonely In Love”.  Vintage strings and voices.
