TWO OLDIES BUT GOODIES: Dianne Brooks: From the Heart & Soul, Norm Amadio Trio: After Hours 1966

I just got these two recordings from the Baby Boomer period on an obscure label called Panda Digital, and they are pretty darned good. Check them out.

Vocalist Dianne Brooks (1939-2005) was an earthy soul, with this album from mostly the late 70s and early 80s a real treat. Pall Stallworth is the bassist most of the time in either a piano or guitar trio/quartet setting. She floats over the nifty bass line on the upbeat “Trying To Get To You” and slinks on the slow cover of Paul McCartney’s “I’m Carrying”. She is assertive in concert setting for a strong take of “Our Love Is Here To Stay” and bluesy to the bopping piano stride on “But Not For Me”. She worked hard for the money.

Pianist Norman Amadio (1928-2020) forms a trio with Bob Price/b and Stan Perry/dr along with a Tony Bennett-inspired Tommy Ambrose on this 3am after hours gig from The Cellar in Toronto, Canada way back in 1966. Amado is a swinging strider, giving some nice Tom Jobim touches on the samba tunes “The Skies” and “Swing With Me”. He’s saloon bluesy with Ambrose on the slinky tango “My Love Can’t Wait” while laconic while the chairs are being put up on “You’re the One For Me”. Casual class.
