On amplified acoustic guitar, Jim Yanda teams with drummer Phil Haynes and Herb Robertson on trumpet, electronics and various other sound creating things for nine originals long on intuition and short on cohesion. The team scratches out sounds on “Consciousness”, sounds like an oncoming train (including whistle) on “Spirits” and goes into a series of fragments on “Hero” and “Stream”. The obligatory scratching of the cymbals is prevalent on many of the pieces, causing one’s skin to crawl as on “Odyssey” and Questions”. Is this scratching the 21st Century version of a Parker riff?
