One of the last remaining of the original “free” drummers, Barry Altschul leads a Coltrane-inspired trio with Jon Irabagon/ts-sss-ac and Joe Fonda/b through five white knuckler originals. Fonda and Alstchul dig in deep as Irabagon’s tenor hearkens to Impulse-era Trane on the fiery “Long Tall Sunshine” while the team loosens up and Irabagon shoots for the stratosphere during “The 3dom Factor”. The angular “Be Out S’Cool” has Irabagon on the searingly high pitched soprillo saxophone as Altschul provides ricochet replies. Fonda leads the way on a wide ranging blues of “Irina” with Irabagon spacious on the alto clarinet, while the leader opens up with fervor on the wailing “Martin’s Stew”. An E ticket of a musical ride.
