FOLKSY, BLUESY, ROCKSY SOUNDS-Paul Thorn: Never Too Late To Call, Cruzados: She’s Automatic!, Willie Nile: The Day The Earth Stood Still, I See Hawks In L.A.: On Our Way, Explorer Tapes: Explorer Tapes, Art of Ensemble: Ain’t Got Long

Genres blend together on this collection of recently released albums. Pop and rock that seem to keep the 70s alive, while other milieu are explored and puree’d

Paul Thorn sings and plays guitar with Ralph Friedrichsen/b, Michael Graham-key, Jeffrey Perkins/dr, Chris Simmons/g and Billy Maddox/etc on a mix of personal and folksy originals. The electric guitars riff on “Here We Go” and rock to the beat of “You Mess around & Get A Buzz” while he rasps out minstrel tunes on the personal “Apple Pie Moonshine” and “It’s Never Too Late To Call”. He harmonizes well with Kitty Jones on the intimate “Sapphire Dream”, likewise with Heather Thorn on the tender trap of “Breaking Up For Good Again”. A 70s singer/songwriter currently living in the wrong decade.

The band of Ron Young/voc, Loren Molinare-Mark Tremalgia/g, Tony Marsico/b and Rob Klonel/dr plug in and play hard , giving heavy three chord fist pumpers like “On The Tilt A Whirl” or giving six string licks like Thin  Lizzy on “Nine Million Tears”. You get a modernized Bo Diddley beat to the title track and a mix of Foreigner and Metallica on the thunderous “Long Black Car” and the ominously dark “Son Of The Blues”. A Sweet Home Alabama of a guitar lick carries out “Across This Ghost Town” , making you think these guys must be the opening act for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Pop rocker Willie Nile plays guitars and piano as he teams up with Jimi K. Bones/g-perc-loops, Johnny Pisano/b, Jon Weber/dr, Andy Burton/B3 and a slew of guests on these originals. At times her brings thoughts of vintage Bob Dylan on the acoustic “I Don’t Remember You” and “Way Of The Heart” while also rocking hard like Mott The Hoople to Pisano’s booming bass during “Off My Medication”. Most songs have an upbeat pulse as on “The Day The Earth Stood Still” with some pumping church organ grinding on “Sanctuary”. Familiar territory well plowed.

Sounds of the 60s and 70s on Sunset Blvd are produced by the California Dreamin’ team of Rob waller/g-voc, Paul Lacques/g-voc-dob, Paul Marshall/b-voc and Victoria Jacobs/dr-voc. They’ve imbibed deeply from The Byrds, with some rich nasally McGuinn-like vocals on  “On Our Way” and nice sweetheart  picking for “Might’ve Been Me” with some chimey guitar riffs for “If I Move”. There’s some serious Gene Clark attitude on “Stealingg” and Jacobs brings some rich voice to the folksy bluegrass swing of “Kensington Market”. Except for the quicky jam of “How You Gonna Know?” the band makes you feel at home at McCabes.

The team of Max Townsley/voc-g, Drew Ericxkson/voc-key, Aaron Sterling/dr, Mike Elizondon/b and a few guests sound like a mix of Leo Sayer and Alan  Price on this easy going collection of originals. The take a bit of 70s rock from Air Supply on “Change Looks Good On You” while vintage piano led pop is in good form on “Radio” and the parlored “Kids These Days” with a chamber atmosphere. Some synthy sounds float on “Washed Away” and fervent rock is steady on “Texas Time” and “All Depends On You”. Oh, lucky men!

Pianist Andrew Burshko directs the music performed by a wide variety of vocal guests as well as musicians Davide Di Renzo/dr, Bryan Holt/cel, Sheila Jaffe/vi, Keith hamm/vi, Joseph Phillips/b, Rob Piltch/g on this reconstruction of standards, pop songs and blues. Satie-esque piano and busy drums have Gregory Hoskins sounding a lot like Paul Simon on “The Boy In The Bubble” while introducing a dark tale on “Calling All Angels”. Chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux gets dark with strings on Irving Berlin’s “What’ll I Do” and delivers an eerie teaming with piano on Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain”. Jessica Mitchell gives an elliptical take of Radiohead’s “Exit Music (For A Film)” and even Lou Reed contributes a tune, with Sarah Slean rapping our “Sad Song”. Keep away from sharp objects.
