If you want an Old School sound on your tenor, check out this guy Keith Loftis, who is big and bold in vintage Sonny Rollins fashion with his team of John Chin/p, Eric Wheeler/b and Walter Jones III/dr on this album of mostly originals. He gives one outing on the soprano during the cheerful “For The Love Of You” along with Chin’s McCoy Tyner-toned chordings. Other than that, he digs in deep after Wheeler’s intro to the pulsating “Premonition” or riding Jones’ hard hitting intro to the dark and rollicking “Oak Cliff”. Speaking of Jones, he sounds positively Elvin-like on the thunderous modal blue “Wifi Addiction” and he gives an urgent staccato feel for Loftis to veer over on the dramatic “Smoke and Mirrors”. Loftis’ sound fills the room over Chin’s lovely piano on “Premonition” and is rich on the bel canto “Weaver of Dreams”. Aria’s on the Mark VI.
