NIXON ERA HUMOR…Richard Pryor: Live at the Comedy Store, 1973

I’m going to go against the tide by saying this, but most entertainment in the 70s has not aged well. Ok, a couple movies like The Sting, Star Wars and The Godfather I & II, and some fusion jazz, but most of the time my eyes glaze over albums, books and movies from The Nixon/Carter years.

Here is a case in point. At the time of this 1973 gig at the Comedy Store, Richard Pryor was just about to hit the big time with his “That N… Crazy” album, with the classic “Wino and Junkie” routine here in an earlier incarnation. The rest of the material is a bit wincing, with lots of material about sex, race  and religion mocking sounding very dated Like Bill Cosby comedy albums, knowing the final outcome of the artist makes for an intriguing perspective. “Man knows not his time”. Do you want to sound smart now, or 50 years from now?
