Posers or singers? Or, can you be both?
Vocalist Doug Ferony could easily be dismissed as a Rat Pack wannabe. This disc has him going through some classic Blue Eyes tunes like “Fly Me To The Moon” and “Come Fly With Me” that have a similar Sinatra-esque swagger. So what? His high baritone has got an enthusiasm and ferver that is infectious. Along with an Armani sharp band, Ferony delivers polished and original takes of “Do You Wanna Dance” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” giving an extra sock in the jaw to each tune. Can’t help but like the moxie of this guy.

Sandra Marlowe has an alluringly husky voice as she caresses a dozen standards with a simpatico team of Larry Dunlap/key, John Shifflet/b and Jan Lewis/d along with a horn team of Jeff Cressman/tb, Charlie McCarthy/sax and John Worley/tp. She can get dark, melancholy and bluesy on material like “Lonely House/With Every Breath I Take” as well as caress latin grooves on “Those Eyes.” A spacious reading of Chick Corea’s “Spain” includes some lovely interplay between her and Dunlap, while Worley sizzles on the indigoed “Black Coffee.” Graceful and gentle on”the Song is You,” she can slip in a bebop line with ease on “Honeysuckle Rose.” A good feel for the material.
