Canadian vocalist Angela Wrigley has a Memphis soul to her voice, singing and playing piano with her team of Derek Stoll/b,-p-key, Dave Lake/dr, Bob Fenske/perc and a horn team of Cory Weeds/ts-as, Vince Mai/p and Rod Murray/tp.
She shows some skills with the pen as well, creating long late night shadows with muted trumpet on “Tiny Glasses”, slinking with a come hither wink on “Crazy Fool” and going popish on “Longing Times”. She goes soul sister with percussion on “How Did I Get H er” and slithers to Weeds’ tenor on “Smooth Operator”, getting stark on a piano/vocal read of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and dramatic with brooding effects on “You Know My Name”. This lady is versatile and visceral in moods.
