I don’t know much about the Finnish zitherlike instrument called the kantele, but Sinikka Langeland uses it to create a wide range of sounds and moods as she accompanies herself on a mix of traditional tunes and originals. Bowed, it can sound like a violin on the haunting “Moose Rune” while it strums like a harp on the lush “ The Eye of the Blue Whale”. She sings in a sinusy way on the guitar toned “Row My Ocean” while the same strings are soft on “Winter Rune” and “The Girl in the Headlands”. Pizzicato’d dulcimer sounds are pretty on “Posdance from Finnskogen” and the rural “When I Was the Forest” with “I See Your Light” sparkling like a midnight star. A journey through the village hills.
