Is the world ready for the Great British Heavy Metal Songbook? Bob Franchischini/ts, Obed Calvaire/dr, Orlando Le Fleming/b and Kevin Hays/p think so in this fun tribute to Led Zeppelin. The gents get quite creative with the melodies, which are essentially based on British blues. You don’t get any weird effects on the famed “Whole Lotta Love”, but instead an easy shuffle, and gives a nice backbeat during a trio stretch of “Kashmir”. Le Fleming crafts a hip bass intro to a rather spacious “Immigrant Song”and Hays is lyrical on “Ten Years Gone” and the haunting intro to “Battle of Evermore”, giving some Debussyesque tones to “No Quarter”. Franceschini’s tenor is rich and lyrical on “Battle” and growls like Turrentine on the deep soulful groove of “Custard Pie”. Been a long time since that rock and roll!
