Sam Post: Post Bach

Pianist Sam Post gives a solo album indebted to the works of JS Bach, but in more of an inspiration than an imitation, taking the master’s works as a starting off point of departure. This album reminds us that bebop actually has its roots in the baroque, as any fan of John Lewis or the MJQ will attest. Here, Post does some sensuous left hand work on a Latinized “Tango Toccata” and demonstrates rich stride work on ragtime reads of the Well Tempered Clavier, Book  1, with some Joplin mixing in with Johanne.

Posts fingers dance on the rapid “Prelude in C Sharp Minor” and are gently charming for his own “Prelude” and “Fugue”, making this an album an successful bridge of genres and generations.
