I had to do a double take (and listen) after listening to this swampy R&B album by vocalist Patti Parks and her team Kenny Neal/g-voc-harm, Carlton Ross/g, Arlando “O’Connor/b, Brandon Adams-Fredrick Neal-Guy Nirelli/key and Michael Harris/dr. The eight tunes here are delivered as if Mavis Staples gathered together some STAX studio guys for a boogie-ing stomping sweat set, as Parks has a gruff growl to her voice and a soulful swing to her timing. There’s one ballad, a dramatic “Don’t Play Me Cheap” with Jason Parfait joining in on the tenor sax, and Kenny Neal sits with Parks on the porch for some singing, delta slide work and Hoener blowing on the honeysuckled “Baby Bee”. Other than that, the B3 hums for Parks’ snarl on the shuffling “ I’m Trouble” the Strat sears through the dark clouds as Parks spews out James Brown’s “It’s A Mans Man’s Man’s World” and the she’s as saucy as dry rub Memphis ribs on the sweet and sour “I Can’t Think”. This lady has dirt under her nails!
