They can’t be accurately called “The Allman Brothers” anymore since Gregg left us in 2017, but the sound and heartbeat of the remaining band members is felt on this wonderful 4 disc peach jam from 2020 in Madison Square Garden. You sure aren’t slumming it with Bonamassa-Ray Vaughn B3er Reese Wynan at the keyboard helm, and you still have Derek Trucks sliding like Ricky Henderson, Warren Hayes blueswailing on guitar and vocals, Oteil Burbridge/b and Chuck Leavell/p keeping the pulse, Marc Quinones/perc, Duane Trucks/dr and charter Brother Jamoe/dr delivering a lithe and swinging simmering groove the entire night.
Except for the gorgeous Blue Sky delivered by Leavell, all of the vocals are delivered by the rough and ready Haynes, and he growls it out on pieces like “It’s Not My Cross To Bear” and “Stand Back” while mixing in gorgeous harmonies on “Midnight Rider”. The twin guitars are a glory to take in, with the axes flying on “Revival”, the Bo Diddley-beated “No One To Run With” and of course the shuffling “Statesboro Blues”. Trucks’ slide work on “Every Hungry Woman” sears through the percolating percussion, and the jazzy blues rock beat of the incessant rhythm team serves up a pilaf of puses on “Whipping Post” and “Mount Jam”. This band defies classification, as it can be a jam band, jazz, blues, rocker or just good ol’ boys having a good time. Still timeless.
